The Heart of a Writer

"...Yes, I love arranging the words and having them fall on the ear the right way and you know you're not quite there and you're redoing it and redoing it and there's a wonderful thrill to it..."
-ELIZABETH STROUT

"Are you writing another book?" a fourth grade boy asked this week as I shared with my daughter's class about writing, expressing their creativity and sharing their gifts.
"That's a great question," I answered.
In the heart of a writer, words are always waiting to be harvested and expressed fully; We feel the inner stirring of a story as it calls out to be told, or our imagination beckons us to create without clearly defined boundaries.

Which path do we take?  Do we tell our unbridled truth as we've lived it or do we blur reality with a fanciful creation that still offers our message?  Hmm...
"We all have a story to share,"  I said to my receptive audience of nine and ten-year-olds.  "Our words build bridges, helping us to understand and grow in acceptance of each other."

"Share your story with at least one other person," a friend once encouraged.  I took this sage advice to heart and my first book, Messages from Within (Balboa Press, 2012) was born.  Chapter Twelve of this book, "Through the Eyes of a Child", then gave rise to my second book, Messages from Children and What They Can Teach Grown-ups (Balboa Press, 2013).
But when and how does one's story find it's way to the surface?  It is not simply to fill in the empty spaces of the page, but rather to embrace the blankness as an invitation to the creative force that guides us to explore our inner depths and beyond.
We can be the curious observer, allowing the words to pour out of us, savoring each moment of this type of mystical experience. Or, we can be a more active participant in the process, pausing to capture the exact word that fully describes our sensation. We can arrange and re-arrange the words, erasing the ones that no longer seem to fit.
So what's next on my writing journey?  My intention is always to write what is most alive within me. There was a time when this blog took the place of my journal to some degree.  I've returned to my journal and pen, which feels more sacred as a place to decipher some extraordinary occurrences in my life.

As always, I will share the insights and messages that offer hope and inspiration to those who are open to my words.  Thank you for accompanying me on this walk across a bridge of deeper understanding.
Love and Blessings,
Kathleen
