"Why did God let Jesus die," my nine year old asked last evening.
I tried as best I could to explain that God doesn't "let" bad things happen...that all human beings are given the choice to do good or to do evil. The people who crucified Jesus did so because they were afraid of Jesus. They did not understand him. They believed that their way was the right way. They are the ones who chose to hurt Jesus.
"Why didn't God save him?"
As I contemplated how best to answer this next question, I immediately thought of the tale of Sleeping Beauty. Remember when the angry fairy cast her spell that the princess would prick her finger on a spindle and die on her sixteenth birthday. Well, no one could undo her spell, but the last fairy could change it somewhat. The princess did not die. Instead, when she pricked her finger, she fell asleep for a hundred years until love rescued her and the entire kingdom.
God is love. Even though God is more powerful than any fairy, He rules by the Spirit of love and forgiveness. He doesn't change the choices made by humans, but He can transform pain into peace.
Jesus is the Prince of Peace and God has allowed him to sleep within our hearts. It is the power of our love that allows Jesus to be alive. It is the power of love that awakens peace.
When enough of us choose love, the world will know peace.
Love and blessings to you,
